What happens to a person after 2 surgeries to the brain within a 12 day period along with several rounds of radiations and chemotherapy sessions? The answer for most of us is obvious-the body will be exhausted and will need rest for a prolonged period of time. If this is the answer you think, then think again, because Bikash Kumar Bera has shown that a few people take such opportunities to show the world that they are not normal. The ‘Wonder Boy’ Bikash was diagnosed with a medical discrepancy termed as ‘hydrocephalus’ while he was in class X, back in July 2014. Due to this, Bikash would experience severe headaches with regular throw-ups, all because of the cerebro spinal fluid accumulation in a part of his brain which created pressure resulting in his headaches. His biggest challenge, in his own words, was “just to sit and keep the head straight”. He would have to lie down while studying and lost his appetite. He became physically weak.
But Bikash was able to forgo all his pain and worked hard to achieve a stellar 90.71% marks in Madhyamik Examination 2016. His score comprised of a 90 in Bengali, 85 in English, 97 in Mathematics, 90 in Physical Science, 96 in Life Science, 87 in History and 90 in Geography. BIkash is a former student of Baranagar Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama High School and he along with his family are very grateful to the school’s alma matter as they came forward and helped the family, to lessen their financial burden a bit by donating around 2 lakh rupees. Bikash recalled of the dark phase when he had to drop a year for his 9 month long treatment at Chennai. He himself used to feel low thinking how others would overtake him. But even then, the boy would try to keep his mother and father optimistic. Bikash could not continue school for the normal time period of 11.00-4.00. So whenever he would go to school for an hour or so, his teachers would stay back and teach him and clarify his doubts. Success stories are different-they say how adversities can be defeated. But maybe in a decade or two, does a champion take birth, who fights to live another day.
