The system of CBSE Class XII Examination paper re-evaluation is soon going to become obsolete, as has been hinted at by more than one member of the Central Board of Education. At one of the meetings today, the board committee drew up the proposal in light of the recent surge in number of requests for re-evaluation of their exam papers which reached nearly a lakh, which is very difficult to cope with even for the country’s largest school board.
This system of re-evaluation was started a couple of years back, in 2014 and in the meeting, most members have been found to support the discontinuity of this procedure, though no concrete decision has been made yet. According to the principal of Springdale School, Ameeta Mullah Wattal, though some students have been able to increase their marks, the re-evaluation process is slowly piling up as a burden on most of the examiners. Furthermore, the task having a highest ceiling of 10 days, prompts the board to look for other, alternative, marking scheme less technique for re–evaluation. This facility was initiated keeping in mind that the IITs and NITs want students in top 20 percentile of select subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics only. According to Wattal, the entire mark and system of evaluation should be debated across the country and a broader and more sophisticated system should be what everyone should aim for.
In one hand when teachers are debating the re-evaluation scheme, one of the teachers describe how 10 of her students’ marks got enhanced due to this facility. So it’s a matter of time before the nation will, as has been pointed out by Wattal, look for a more sophisticated, less marks-obsessive system for evaluation.
