An expert committee constituted by Karnataka founded that school students carry bags weighing at least 10kg. In some cases the weight of school bags extend 15 kg and beyond the safe limit. But studies say that children should not carry bags more than 10 percent of their body weight. Anything more than 15 percent is damaging and dangerous. But findings of the committee prove that they are made to carry bags that weigh between 30% and 50% of their body weight. The committee was set up to study the problem and look at ways to bring down the weight of school bags. Maharashtra has recently passed a resolution capping the weight of school bags at 10% of body weight and issued guidelines for schools and parents. This is an initiative to spread awareness among schools and parents and a holistic approach.
