The Gujarat Government has thought to introduce English as a subject from Class I and even earlier in pre-primary anganwadis. The proposal has found support in state-wide consultations held for the new National Education Policy. The final document id yet to be submitted to the Union HRD ministry.

Presently, English is introduced to children in Class 3 in around 38,000 government schools. The minister said that the state education department is exploring possibility of teaching maths and science using technical English words so that Gujarati-medium students are spared from the painful transition to higher education which is exclusively in English.
