CBSE affiliated schools is unanimously being favored by most high performing students for their ‘+2 ‘courses according to the top ICSE schools affiliated to the CISCE.The prominent trend can be seen from the fact that the seats which CBSE school have kept aside for outside-school students, have almost filled up as quickly as it could mainly because the top ICSE performers are not looking forward to join ISC for their further education. Already talks have been there regarding a ‘re-alignment’ of the ICSE syllabus along the lines of CBSE and situation demands a swift execution of that proposal.
A few instances will provide solid evidence. At Birla High School, 55 seats have already been occupied out of the 60 in the science stream for outsiders, major bulk of the admission being of ICSE students. DPS Ruby Park has reported 71 % intake of students passing out of ICSE institutes and similar is the case with Apeejay School Park Street, where 30 out of the 41 seats for class XI science stream that were open to outside candidates have been taken by those from ICSE institutes. In fact, numbers are not even showing the total picture clearly. Apart from the bulk, it is the high quality students’ migration to the CBSE schools which are of more concern for the ICSE schools. For example, nearly 10 % top performers in ICSE 2016 have migrated to the CBSE schools over their very own ICSE institute, St. Jame’s School.  A concerned principal of St. Jame’s School, Terence Ireland said that the school is losing its best students more and more with every passing year, from 3-4 students in 2014 to around 16 for 2016 batch of 130 students.
With deeper introspection into the matter, the probable and plausible answer that comes up has been making headlines for a few years recently. It is nothing but a common perception of the students that the CBSE curriculum and pattern is more competitive-exam friendly and equips the students to perform better during their entrance tests. All of the head so f city schools of the two boards have however agreed that this is not the first occurrence of this but has been less pronounced than this year previously. Even after the approved change to align the ICSE maths and science syllabi in line with the CBSE, the drain couldn’t be arrested. Schools such as Birla High and others have claimed that 95% of their allotted seats for outsider students are from ICSE institutes. However according to Raja Mcgee, principal of Calcutta Boy’s School, the balance is distorted by no similar reverse shift from CBSE to ICSE.
Amidst these intra Board ‘brain-drain’ the most affected are the top notch ICSE schools such as Calcutta Boy’s, St Jame’s, La Martiniere for Boy’s, La Martiniere for Girl’s, St. Xavier’s, Don Bosco Park Circus, Julien Day, Pratt Memorial, Assembly of God Church and others of the kind who are losing their brightest students. It is only fair to understand that the students common perception regarding the facilities stemming from CBSE as a Board in +2 has a lot to do with the fact that competitive examination of great value such as JEE main, JEE advanced, NEET etc are generally conducted by the central board itself.
