Tuxedos, flowing chiffons, and hired convertibles -school farewells in the city are bigger and fancier. Even as the final exams draw near, it’s the season for send offs, as students bid adieu to school life and get ready to step into college. And with dress codes and theme parties, they are doing it in style. The dress code was western formals and saree for Class 12 students and kurta and salwar kameez for Class 11. All students were asked to dress modestly.
Vael’s Billabong High International School also had a similar dress code, with suits for boys and sarees for girls. This year the theme was `awards ceremony’, with the whole event being conducted like the Oscars. While some schools have farewells for Class 12 students, others also throw combined parties including Class 10 students. Mock awards, talent shows, and cultural programmes are a common feature and often accompanied by a good spread in most schools. Some even feature food stalls and selfie booths.
However, along with the fun and frolic is also the peer pressure to dress well and look good. Though school authorities say while dress codes are in place to ensure modest and formal dressing, children are not required to flaunt expensive attire.
