Change in Curriculum and Question-Paper format have been instrumental behind the excellent results of students in “non-lab” streams such as Commerce and Arts in West Bengal Higher Secondary Examination 2016. The % of students receiving O, A+, A, B+, B and C grades have increased. Nilanjana Saha, a student of Arts from Arambagh Girls High school, has bagged the third position in this year’s HS Examination in spite of having Philosophy, Geography and Computer application as her subjects, which has never occurred in the past for West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary. 56 candidates made it to the top-10 merit list for this year’s HS examination. A great number of the elite candidates in the merit list are from Commerce and Arts stream but female candidates are ahead of male in pass percentage.

The number of candidates who passed without a grade, has decreased. The 1st rank has been bagged by Swagatm Haldar of Panchashayar Shiksha Niketan,Kolkata. Navonil Deb, from Jenkins School,Koochbihar, has got the 2nd rank with a total aggregate of 492. Along with him, Sanjay Sarkar from Maynaguri Subhashnagar High School, Jalpaiguri and Swarnava Nandi from Balurghat High school, South Dinajpur have also come 2nd in a three-way tie with the same aggregate of 492.

From the Arts stream, with an aggregate of 485, Monalisa Haldar from Diamond Harbour Girls High School has bagged the 8th position in the merit list. At the same time, with an aggregate of 484, two girls—Sanjukta Ghosh of Arts, from Balurghat Girls and Sangeeta Jha of Commerce from Uttarpara Girls High School have come joint 9th in this year’s merit list.

Moreover, there has been a gradual decline in the number of school-dropouts. In 2013, the percentage of school-dropouts was nearly 2.2% which has crashed down to 0.87% this year. However, Kaveri Dutta, principal of Modern High School says that giving 99 out of 100 in Language subjects is very impractical even though even she thinks that reducing the marks gap is essential. But this would mean that the competition to study in a college of students choice will also increase.

The pass percentage of HS this year is the maximum recorded-approximately 83.65%, 1.23% greater than previous year. Total number of successful candidates is 577858, with girl candidates(317947) more in number than boy candidates(315983). Among the districts, East Midnapore has the highest success rate(92.38 %), followed by West Midnapore(88.96%) ,Kolkata (87.56%),Hooghly (86.88%), South 24 Parganas(86.84%), Howrah(86.74%) and North 24 parganas(84.43%).
