ASMITA is acronym for All School Monitoring, Individual Tracing Analysis. In February 2017 the government approved SAY( Shala Asmita Yojana)-School Students Database , will come into effect as the world’s largest student tracking database system with the target amount of school-going student being somewhat around 25 crore.
The system to  take effect next year is going to use the Adhaar card number to track educational development of students which will monitor every aspect of the school children starting from attendance, enrollment, drop-out to toilets and mid-day meal. The initiative is aimed to cover 15 lakh schools and also 77 lakh teachers of government and government aided schools. Those children without Adhaar card will be provided an unique tracking ID for them and in fact a few states like UP and MP have already given such numbers.
The old mid-day meal database of the centre will be merged with the new one. When  enquired about the sudden idea and motive behind such a step. A central minister explained that through unique ID for each student, data can be compared from previous years and this in turn will help them in making new policies. Areas of improvement will also be highlighted using this system.
The National Informatics Centre is responsible for making the software based on a HRD ministry provided matrix. The system will start analysis as soon as the data are fed into the software. The first set of data collection will be over by February.  Initially as enrollment details will be fed every year once, attendance will  be taken quarterly  but gradually after the system takes effect, it will become daily.
