The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Results 2016 witnessed a huge increase not only in the number of candidates appearing for the examination, but also in the domination of non-native candidates in the Rank holders list. Out of the Candidates who appeared for the test in the 4 centers open for outstation candidates namely Kolkata and its contiguous districts of Howrah and two Parganas, 7530 such candidates have grabbed a top 10000 rank, a success rate of 75.03% up from 25.57% from last year. Also, the number of students coming from outside the city to write the examination has more than doubled than that in 2015. Sajal Dasgupta, chairman of WBJEE Board, clarified that students choose Kolkata and nearby centres for their examination mainly due to convenience of travel.

A deeper introspection would show that this sudden increase in the participation of students from other states in the WBJEE can be attributed to a change made to the WBJEE exam in 2012 during which the JEE Course was aligned to the content and entrance examination with that of other boards thereby opening the gate for students from other boards to participate more easily in the state joint. 2016 saw breaking of the records of 2013 when students from outstation was allowed for the first time to sit for the WBJEE. That year around 42,382 candidates wrote the exam, accounting for 38.3% of the total number of 1,10,599 candidates, amongst which 31224 candidates made it to the merit list.

According to an official at Jadavpur University, which is the No.1 choice of engineering aspirants aiming to study in Bengal, students mainly from Bihar and Jharkhand have been flocking the state joint’s Merit List. Similar pattern has been reported by IIEST Shibpur. A senior official of the higher education department said that with JEE going the objective –multiple choice route like JEE-mains and JEE-advanced, the influx is increasing thereby.
